Dirk Schlachter was born in Bad Nauhein, Germany on February 15, 1965. At the age of 8, he went to the Music School. His first band was called "Blue Life". After that he formed "Sold Out" and "Louis Glover House Band". He met Kai Hansen in 1989, when they were studying music together. Dirk joined Gamma Ray as a guitarist, but in 1996 he decided to play bass, since he is a bassist by profession.
