Kai Hansen was born on January 17, 1963 in Hamburg, Germany. He first realized that he liked hard songs by listening to "Sweet" and "Slade. At first he was just headbanging in his room, while listening to this kind of music. He started to play the guitar when he was 12 years old. Before that, he played the drums -or at least tried to. He started by constructing his first drums using garbage bins. His parents refused to buy him actual drums, given the "annoying" noise they produced, but they bought him an acoustic guitar instead. So his carrier as a drummer came to an end before it started, and he started taking classic guitar lessons. Soon afterwards, he wanted to play songs like "Smoke on the water", so he bought his first electric guitar, realizing that it didn't have 4 strings, as he thought. As soon as he started playing, he assembled his first band, "Kathrin Wheel", with some friends of his. Later, he met Piet Sielck who also played the guitar, so they played and sang together, until they met Markus Grosskopf and Ingo Schwichtenberg. It was then when they put another band together, called "Gentry", renamed to "Second Hell" and finally to "Iron Fist". Then Piet Sielck went to America, and Kai met Michael Weikath at a party. They talked about music and Weikath told him that he needed one more guitarist for his band, "Powerfool". Kai and Mike played at "Powerfool" for some time, but they left due to, kind of, musical disagreements with the other members. So together with Weikath, Hansen rejoined Markus Grosskopf and Ingo Schwichtenberg and formed "Helloween". At Helloween Kai created the Melodic Heavy Metal, with the help of their next lead vocalist, Michael Kiske. Hansen didn't have any singing skills at that time. He was just singing out as loud as he could. So they had this thought about one other singer, in order to enable them to play more complex guitar songs. In 1989, Kai left Helloween, due to differences with Michael Weikath, and together with his old friend Ralf Scheepers they formed "Gamma Ray". Kai and Ralf first met when the latter was in the singers list for "Helloween". Kai Hansen became the lead vocalist of "Gamma Ray", after the dismissal of Ralf Scheepers in 1994, who found it difficult to travel to Hamburg often, for rehearsals. Now, while still in "Gamma Ray", Kai also participates with Piet Sielck and Thomen Stauch in an album project of a new band, "Iron Savior", formed by those three. He was also invited to play as a guest guitarist with Primal Fear, his old friend's, Ralf Scheepers, new band.
